Magic 101: How to Get Gigs as a Magician My name is Ben Nemzer and I’m a magician. One of my specialties is close-up magic which
is magic with ordinary objects; decks of cards, ropes, rubber bands and I do that all over
New York City. I’m going to teach you some of the basics
of magic that you guys can start performing right away. Well when you’re a magician getting gigs or
getting jobs or getting shows it’s all about networking and really putting yourself out
there. So first of all if you’re doing a show you
want to get in your mind set, what other shows can I get out of this show? How are you promoting yourself? Do you have business cards? Are your business cards good? Do you have a website that people can look
at? And everything you do you need to think of
ways that you can branch out. The other thing is you want to make sure your
magic is good. You want to make sure that you’re practiced. You want to make sure that you’re having fun,
that people are having fun watching you because the best way to get your name out there and
the best way to really get more shows is word of mouth and if everybody’s saying oh Ben
Nemzer he’s the great magician then people are going to want to hire me. If people are saying that you’re bad, they’re
not going to want to hire you. So you know the best way to get shows is to
do shows. And some great ways to get started if you
haven’t done any shows yet is to start doing them for free. You know there’s not shame in doing a free
show. Find a library, a community center, a nursing
home, anywhere where you can do a free show just to get your name out there and to get
the experience because the more you perform the more you’re going to perform.”
